What are the trademark renewal due dates in Hong Kong?
A Hong Kong registration runs for 10 years from its date of registration, which is the filing date, not the later date on which the mark was entered in the register. It expires on the day before the tenth anniversary of the filing date.
The first renewal is due on the expiry date. Form T8 can be filed from six months before expiry, and not earlier. The IPD sends a reminder between six months and one month before expiry. A deadline that falls on a day the Registry is closed moves to the next business day.
For example, if the filing date is 2015-01-16, the registration expires on 2025-01-15 and the renewal window opens on 2024-07-15.
Each renewal adds 10 years, counted from the previous expiry date, so a late renewal does not move the cycle. There is no limit on the number of renewals.
For example, once renewed in 2025, the registration next expires on 2035-01-15.
Hong Kong trademarks are renewed with the Trade Marks Registry of the Intellectual Property Department (IPD), under the Trade Marks Ordinance (Cap. 559).
The Madrid System does not currently extend to Hong Kong. China's membership does not cover it, and the Madrid provisions in the Ordinance are awaiting a commencement notice. Every Hong Kong registration is therefore renewed directly with the IPD. Form T8 requires a contact address in Hong Kong for the person making the request; a P.O. Box, 'care of' or mail-forwarding address is not accepted. This contact address is separate from the address for service recorded on the register.
Renewal opens 15 Jul 2024 and the registration expires on 15 Jan 2025. Until 15 Jul 2025 it can still be renewed with a HKD 500 late fee. After that the Registrar removes the mark, and restoration can be requested within six months of the published removal date.
Official trademark renewal fees by year in Hong Kong
Official IPD fees in HKD, set by the Trade Marks Rules. Renewal is charged per class: a higher fee for the first class and a lower fee for each class after it. Filing online and on paper costs the same.
| Fee type | Official fee (HKD) |
|---|---|
| Renewal, first class | 2,670 |
| Each additional class | +1,340 |
| Late renewal fee, in the grace period (flat) | +500 |
| Restoration and renewal, first class | 4,000 |
| Restoration, each additional class | +1,340 |
| Typical 3-class renewal | 5,350 |
The HKD 500 late renewal fee is a single flat amount added to the renewal fee, not a per-class charge. To renew only some classes, file Form T8 for the classes you keep and Form T9 to surrender the others. The fee is based on the number of classes in the renewal request.

Missed a trademark renewal deadline in Hong Kong?
For six months after expiry, the registration can still be renewed by filing Form T8 with the renewal fee and a flat HKD 500 late renewal fee. This period cannot be extended. If the mark is not renewed, the Registrar removes it from the register and publishes the removal and its date in the official journal. The owner can then request restoration and renewal within six months of that removal date, at HKD 4,000 for the first class plus HKD 1,340 for each additional class. Restoration is discretionary: the Registrar must be satisfied that it is just to restore the mark.
If the registration expires on 15 Jan 2025, it can still be renewed until 15 Jul 2025 by paying the renewal fee plus HKD 500. A restoration deadline depends on the removal date the Registrar publishes, so it cannot be calculated in advance.

1. When is a Hong Kong trademark renewal due?
On the expiry date, which is the day before the tenth anniversary of the filing date. Form T8 can be filed from six months before that date. For six months after it, renewal is still possible with a HKD 500 late fee.
2. What happens if the Hong Kong grace period passes?
The Registrar removes the mark from the register and publishes the removal date. You can then request restoration and renewal within six months of that date, at HKD 4,000 for the first class plus HKD 1,340 per additional class. The Registrar restores the mark only if it is just to do so, so you must explain why it was not renewed.
3. How long does a Hong Kong trademark registration last?
10 years from the filing date, renewable for further 10-year periods with no limit. Each renewal runs from the previous expiry date.
4. Does the IPD require proof of use to renew?
No. Renewal needs only Form T8 and the fee. Separately, a registration can be revoked if the mark has not been genuinely used in Hong Kong for a continuous period of three years.
5. Can a Hong Kong trademark be renewed through the Madrid System?
No. A Madrid designation of China does not cover Hong Kong, so a Hong Kong registration is renewed directly with the IPD.
