Trademark renewal fees in New Zealand: costs, due dates and grace period
Renewing a New Zealand trademark costs NZD 200 per class, excluding GST, paid to the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ). A registration lasts 10 years from its deemed date of registration. You can renew up to 12 months before expiry, or within six months after it at the same fee. After that the mark is removed and cannot be restored.
What are the trademark renewal due dates in New Zealand?
A New Zealand registration lasts 10 years from its deemed date of registration: the New Zealand filing date, or the earliest convention priority date where priority was claimed. Renewal can be filed from 12 months before the expiry date.
The first renewal is due on the tenth anniversary of the deemed date of registration. IPONZ accepts renewal from 12 months before that date until six months after it, and sends a reminder to the address for service before expiry.
For example, if the deemed date of registration is 2015-01-16, the renewal window opens on 2024-01-16 and the registration expires on 2025-01-16.
Each renewal adds a further 10 years. There is no limit on the number of renewals.
For example, once renewed in 2025, the next renewal is due by 2035-01-16.
New Zealand trade marks are renewed with the Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ), under the Trade Marks Act 2002.
New Zealand is a member of the Madrid Protocol. An international registration designating New Zealand is renewed through WIPO, not IPONZ.
Your renewal window opens one year before expiry, here 16 Jan 2024, and the deadline is 16 Jan 2025. Miss it and the mark can still be renewed until 16 Jul 2025 at the standard fee, with no surcharge. Each renewal adds another 10 years, with no limit on how many times.
Official trademark renewal fees by year in New Zealand
Official IPONZ fees in NZD, charged per class. Fees are quoted excluding GST; IPONZ adds 15% GST where the applicant or requestor is in New Zealand.
| Fee type | Official fee (NZD) |
|---|---|
| Renewal, per class (excluding GST) | 200 |
| Renewal within 6 months after expiry | No surcharge |
| Typical 3-class renewal (excluding GST) | 600 |
New Zealand charges no late fee: renewing in the six months after expiry costs the same NZD 200 per class. Where convention priority was claimed, the term runs from the earliest priority date, so expiry can come before the anniversary of the New Zealand filing.

Missed a trademark renewal deadline in New Zealand?
On the expiry date the mark's status changes to Registered - past expiry date. For the next six months it can still be renewed at the standard fee, and the renewal then takes effect from the expiry date as if the status had never changed. Until it is renewed, however, the mark cannot be enforced as a registered trade mark in infringement, criminal or border protection proceedings. Once six months have passed, IPONZ removes the mark and it cannot be restored; the only option is a new application.
If the registration expires on 16 Jan 2025, it can still be renewed until 16 Jul 2025 at NZD 200 per class. After that date it is removed.

1. When is a New Zealand trademark renewal due?
On the tenth anniversary of the deemed date of registration, which is the filing date or the earliest convention priority date. IPONZ accepts renewal from 12 months before that date and up to six months after it.
2. Is there a late fee for renewing a New Zealand trademark?
No. Renewing within six months after expiry costs the standard NZD 200 per class. Once those six months have passed, IPONZ removes the mark and it cannot be restored.
3. Is a New Zealand trademark still protected after the expiry date?
Only partly. While its status is Registered - past expiry date, the mark cannot be enforced as a registered trade mark in infringement proceedings. Renewing within six months restores the registration from the expiry date.
4. How long does a New Zealand trademark last?
10 years from the deemed date of registration, renewable for further 10-year periods with no limit.
5. Does IPONZ require proof of use to renew?
No. Separately, a registration can be revoked if the mark has not been genuinely used for a continuous period of three years or more.
6. Does IPONZ send a renewal reminder?
Yes, to the address for service on the register, before the expiry date. A reminder that does not arrive does not extend the deadline.
