How to renew a trademark in Singapore (IPOS)?

In this article you will find information on:
  • When trademark renewal fees are due
  • The renewal fee amount and currency
  • Details on other types of intellectual property valid in the jurisdiction
  • FAQ related to the renewal process

Region

In Singapore, trademarks are renewed through the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), the government agency responsible for administering intellectual property rights. Renewal is required to keep a Singapore trademark registration active.

Singapore is a member of the Madrid Protocol. If your trademark is an International Registration designating Singapore, the renewal of that international registration is handled through WIPO Madrid System procedures. IPOS charges the same renewal fee per class for international registrations designating Singapore as it does for national marks.

Due dates

Trademark protection in Singapore is granted for a fixed term starting from the filing date, and each renewal extends protection for another term. Under current rules, the term is 10 years.

Renewal can be filed up to 6 months before the expiry date. Singapore also allows a late renewal period of up to 6 months after expiry, subject to a higher fee. If you do not renew within this grace period, the registration lapses and is removed from the register.

Unlike many jurisdictions, Singapore offers a separate restoration route after the grace period closes. Restoration carries a further increased fee and is not automatic.

For example, if the filing date of a Singapore trademark is 2015-09-15:

The initial term ends on 2025-09-15 (10 years).

The renewal window opens on 2025-03-15 (6 months before expiry) and closes on 2025-09-15.

The grace period then runs from 2025-09-16 to 2026-03-15, at the late renewal fee.

Once renewed, the next renewal would be due by 2035-09-15, and so on.

Singapore Trademark Renewal Fees FAQ

1.

When is the first trademark renewal filing due in Singapore?

keyboard arrow down

The first renewal is due at the end of the initial registration term, which is 10 years from the filing date. You can file the renewal application starting 6 months before the expiry date. A 6-month grace period after expiry is available at the late renewal fee.

2.

Can I renew my trademark after missing the deadline?

keyboard arrow down

Yes. During the 6-month grace period after expiry, you can still renew by paying the late renewal fee of SGD 700 per class instead of the standard SGD 480. If the grace period also closes, you can apply to restore the registration at SGD 770 per class.

3.

How long does a Singapore trademark last?

keyboard arrow down

A Singapore trademark registration lasts 10 years from the filing date, and each renewal extends it for another 10 years. There is no limit to the number of times a trademark can be renewed, as long as renewal fees are paid on time.

4.

Does IPOS require proof of use for renewal?

keyboard arrow down

IPOS does not require proof of use in order to renew a trademark. However, a registered mark can be revoked under Section 22 of the Trade Marks Act.
