A registered design in India lasts 10 years from the registration date and can be extended once, by 5 years, to a maximum of 15. The extension must be applied for before the initial ten years expire. There is no grace period: a lapsed design can only be restored, within one year.
What are the design renewal due dates in India?
India protects a registered design for 10 years from the registration date, extendable once by 5 years to a 15-year maximum.
The extension must be applied for before the initial ten years expire, payable to the Designs Office. It carries the design into year 11.
For example, if the registration date is 2016-01-20, the extension must be applied for by 2026-01-20.
There is only one extension, of 5 years, which takes the design to the 15-year maximum. There is no further extension.
For example, protection can be kept alive until 2031-01-20, after which no further renewal is possible.
India is not a member of the Hague System. There is no international design route into India: a design must be registered directly with the Designs Office, and every renewal fee is paid to the Designs Office rather than to WIPO.

Missed a design renewal deadline in India?
There is no grace period for the extension. The application to extend the design from 10 to 15 years must reach the Designs Office before the initial ten years expire, at INR 8,000, or INR 2,000 for a natural person, startup or small entity. If it is missed, the design ceases to have effect, but you can apply to restore it within one year, on Form 4 with a verified statement explaining the delay.
If the extension due on 20 Jan 2026 is missed, the design ceases to have effect. A restoration request can still be filed until about 20 Jan 2027.

What happens to an Indian industrial design before it has been registered?
Renewal fees must be paid in India regardless of whether the industrial design is registered or not. You can find the rules for calculating the renewal due dates above in the Due Dates section.
When can I pay the renewal fee in India?
The renewal fee in India can be paid at any time before the renewal due date. Technically, all annuities can be paid at the same time, meaning that you will only have to pay one, large sum of renewal fee.
Can I renew an industrial design after I miss a renewal due date?
Yes, it is possible to renew an Indian industrial design after its renewal due date. If you fail to pay the renewal fee before the due date, a grace period of 12 months is given wherein the renewal fees can still be settled. When entering the grace period you will incur a surcharge fee to be settled along with the renewal fee. If you wish to maintain the industrial design, both the renewal fee and the surcharge fee will have to be settled. For example, if an industrial design has a renewal due date of 2021-05-31 and the due date is missed, the industrial design will enter the grace period from 2021-06-01. After this point both the renewal fee and the surcharge fee will need to be settled by 2022-05-31. Failure to pay these fees before the surcharge due date will result in the industrial design lapsing.
